Children of the Mekong? What is it?
Children of the Mekong was founded in Laos in 1958 by René Péchard. Quickly, sponsoring became the right response in helping Southeast Asian children to go to school and take charge of their future.
Today our work covers seven countries: Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and China.
Can I choose the country I would like to sponsor? As well as the age of my sponsor child?
Yes, of course! You can submit a request for the specific country that you are interested in… We will do our best to make it possible for you to sponsor a child from this country and if it is not possible, we will let you know. If you do not have a particular preference, we will choose a sponsor child for you. We look at the country the child is in and if it’s a priority country and at the difficulty of the child’s home environment. We also try to find a sponsor child who is in the same age range as the child who will be receiving the sponsorship present.
What will the person I offer this sponsorship to receive?
We will send a special sponsoring letter and documents to the address you provided. The folder will include various vital information concerning the sponsorship and the Children of the Mekong Organisation.
Also included inside will be a “gift bag”, which contains a picture of your sponsor child, a description of his or her family and living environment, his or her address, as well as a small “sponsorship guide”.
Feel free to also show this video, which explains how the sponsorship works.
How long does a sponsorship last?
Children of the Mekong wants to help children over the long term. Sponsorship provides financial but also moral support to the child through the exchange of letters and support over time. Your sponsorship lasts as long as your sponsored child goes to school and the economic situation of the family justifies it.
We understand that certain situations may require you to interrupt your sponsorship. In this case, we ask you to tell us early so that we have time to find a new sponsor for your sponsor child.
If you prefer to simply offer one-time help rather than make a long-term commitment, please choose to donate.
The child I would like to offer the sponsorship to is too young to write. Would it still be possible to help and sponsor a child?
Of course! If your child is too young to write, they can send drawings or photos until they are old enough to start sending letters. You may find the desire to communicate with a pen friend motivates your child to learn to write more quickly!
